
I didn't have the car out much last year because of an unexplained engine noise. When I started it up the engine had a little bit of a hard tapping noise. After running some engine cleaner in it the noise seemed to stop. I then replaced the oil and filter and all sounded well. However due to money constraints, I could not afford to insure it over the summer, so I only insured it for a couple of months. I am really looking forward to getting it out this year though and enjoying the nice weather. More to come real soon...
This website is devoted to my 1984 Porsche 928S. I have owned it for six years now and I would like to share my experiences and thoughts. My wife purchased the car for me when I was diagnosed with cancer in 1999. I have had good times and bad times, but the 928S is the best car I have ever owned! I have owned several different sports cars and this is by far the best handling car I've had. Read my thoughts on the 928S.
This can all be summed up in three words, I love it! It is amazing at how old the car is and yet the looks are still modern. the handling is the best that I have ever had in a car. I have owned a 91 Dodge Stealth RT, 91 Eagle Talon TSi, 92 Eagle Talon TSi, 93 Camaro Z28, 93 Dodge Stealth RT Twin Turbo, and this is by far the best handling car of them all. It just feels so good going into corners. You can feel every movement of the steering so you know if you are overdoing it, no surprises when you don't want them. The car has a very good top end speed but acceleration is nothing dramatic. It is not very powerful at low end but there is enough juice at higher revs. You have to keep in mind that this is a grand touring car with more emphasis on ride quality and autobahn speeds. I have never raced the car and probably will never race it. I have heard from many people that it is one of the best cars on a track though. The only problem is its weight. From everything being power, seats, moonroof, etc. the wires end up weighing over 40lbs. Speaking of wiring, this thing is an electrical powerhouse. If you ever have an electrical problem, you will need a set of the factory manuals so that you can find your way around the maze of wires.
One thing that this model has going for it that other Porsche models don't is the fact that there aren't many around. When you go to a Porsche event or even a car show, you can bet that you will probably be the only one with a 928. Everyone seems to have Boxsters or 911's. 924's and 944's are not frequent, but it is more common to see one of those than a 928. Lots of questions are asked by people everywhere so be prepared to know a little about the car if you want to answer. I have had some people think the car is a brand new model that hasn't been on the market long. Most people really accept the 928 as a true Porsche. Others don't however. Whether it is because of the front mounted watercooled engine to the V-8 engine, some true Porsche enthusiasts don't accept the 928. You will notice this driving down the road. I have had many drivers of 928's, 911's, and Boxsters wave at me showing a sign like " nice taste in cars." It is usually the doctors that buy the car just for the prestige and don't care about the marque itself that will ignore you completely.
If you do plan on getting one of these vehicles make sure that you know what you are getting into. Get it inspected at a reputable mechanic if at all possible. These cars are very complex to work on and have very high maintenance costs. If you can change the oil yourself you should be able to learn very quickly on how the car works and what needs to be fixed. I say this because I knew nothing about cars prior to getting this car and now I know more than ever. I have changed out the alternator, timing belt, even the cam. If you don't think you have the expertise to work on the car then you can always try a reputable shop, just remember that the price for a Porsche trained mechanic can get well into the 100's of dollars per hour.
